Description
Greetings From Conglomeration Of Miscellany!Up for auction is a vintage Electra Bearcat BC-210 10-Channel UHF/VHF scanner circa 1976-77 in need of a new home - and someone who has the time and patience to troubleshoot an audio circuit issue. It was bought new by my late Father-In-Law, who was an Amateur Radio Extra Class license holder. It developed an issue where sound would be heard from the speaker as normal receiving some broadcasts, while other times voice would be replaced by a random humming sound. I attempted to troubleshoot the radio inspecting simple possibilities such as wiring, speaker, amplifier or transformer issues. Recent online research found that capacitors related to the sound processor had a tendency to fail causing this condition. However, without a proper schematic, it is hard to determine what circuits to test.
Other than the audio issue, all other aspects of the radio are in working order. It can be powered from DC 13.8V or 110 AC power from its built-in transformer. The LED display illuminates bright red with no characters missing. All buttons have been individually cleaned and have great elasticity. The membrane to the user control IC board has clean contacts, with each one responding correctly to the correlating button they represent. The squelch and volume control knobs work as they are intended, with no static or hiss when adjusted. The internal memory backup battery was found to be discharged and had leaked slightly onto itself and the negative contact. However, no damage was noted to the main IC board on which it resides. It was removed and the negative contact was cleaned. A battery of the exact same height could not be located. However, the battery in its place does match the diameter and voltage requirements, requiring only a slight bending of the positive battery terminal to complete the connection.
This radio could be made perfect again with a little time and patience. It was a quality piece of technology for its time. The right person can make this piece of radio nostalgia work as it did back in the 1970s. The level of functionality it has places it above the parts-only category. It is being sold as-is without returns disclosing all known issues. However, we will ship your scanner with the utmost care via UPS which will include fragile packing, insurance, and item tracking. Please feel free to ask us any questions before you commit to purchasing. Thank you for visiting our store today!
