Impressive, large mid 20th Century brass ships globe onion lantern. This features a riveted body production and the clear glass globe is protected by 6 sturdy brass vertical supports with 2 horizontal supports. The supports are riveted to the top and bottom of the globe lamp.
This is a reproduction of Onion Lanterns that were used in the colonial era as a light to burn whale oil and were used by nautical shipping companies and railroads. When made of brass they resist the harsh coastal New England weather. The shape of the glass globe and surrounding cage male the lantern very sturdy and practical to use even in the wind and rain. This looks best hanging from a hook but can also operate sitting on a table. The antique finish should not need polishing. Comes with 2 wicks in each lantern and burns lamp oil or kerosene.
